The whole "spirit of the game" bs argument just doesn't hold up here. It's crazy that this is even controversial anymore. Imagine the stakes were really high, like a world cup final, and it's 2 runs to win, 1 run left to draw the match, with one wicket left. There's absolutely no way I'd give the non-striker any leeway. People would go crazy if the WC was won like that but the onus is absolutely on the non-striker to be wary of the rules especially when everyone knows what's on the line. You try to give yourself an advantage to run the bye, I'm running you out. It's that simple. There's no excuse for it. Rules are rules. The whole "it doesn't look good" mentality needs to go away when it comes to this scenario. If you want to take the risk, you have to bear the potential consequences that may come with it. Do it if you want, but don't cry about it if you get dismissed. It's on you.
